My daughter loved Tadeo Turtle, a story about a little turtle who enjoyed life until he realized how different he was from the other animals around him. He dreamed that his shell fell off and he quickly learned how perfectly God had made him. My daughter was able to relate to Tadeo Turtle and learned the importance of being herself and accepting who God created her to be.
Author, Janis Cox, uses beautiful watercolor paintings to accompany her delightful tale. I find it fascinating that she both wrote and illustrated this book- weaving together a beautiful rhyme with a purposeful message. The message is simple, yet profound, and reaches the hearts of young children and adults alike. This is a gentle story that children will appreciate.
Janis includes activities at the end of the book that adults can do with kids, making the book come alive and adding another hands-on, fun dimension to the story. I especially like the dough turtle recipe.
The author also includes some additional research about turtles at the end of the book for further learning. She understands that kids have inquisitive minds and may want to learn more about turtles after hearing her story. I appreciate her list of turtle resources as well as the craft activities she added to the book.
Overall, Tadeo Turtle was a hit in my home. It is a wonderful story that my kids and I enjoyed reading; the message is profound, the illustrations are beautiful, the crafts are fun and the additional resources on turtles were an added bonus.
