Ten years ago, our homeschool was going through a season of big changes, and I finally felt like we were getting into a groove! After months of feeling overwhelmed—especially after our move—things started to click. Looking back, I’m so grateful I didn’t give in to the temptation of enrolling the kids in school because that was the season when I truly discovered my passion for teaching them at home.
I remember rediscovering the joy of investing in my kids, pouring into our family, and fully embracing the homeschooling journey. It was a lot of work—planning, prepping, and organizing—but watching my kids grow and thrive made every bit of effort worth it. I loved being their teacher, and those years shaped so much of our family’s learning adventure.

DIY Homeschool Storage Cubbies
Organization has been key, so I put together these simple and affordable storage cubbies using six crates from Walmart. They were only about $4 each! I stacked them on their sides, tied them together with yarn, and now we have a perfect little locker system for storing schoolwork. Want to see exactly how I did it? Check out my YouTube tutorial!
Flannel Board Fun for Preschool Learning
Another project I tackled was making a flannel board for my preschooler. I wanted to create an engaging learning experience with interactive centers, and this felt like a great place to start. To be honest, this kind of setup didn’t come naturally to me at first, but I’ve been putting in the effort to make our homeschool space something my kids can be excited about.
Instead of using traditional felt cutouts, I’m taking a shortcut—printing pieces on card stock, laminating them, and adding velcro to the back. Easy and durable!
Here’s what I used to make the board:
- A poster board (Dollar Store find!)
- Felt material (Walmart)
- A hot glue gun
- Scissors
And the process was super simple:
Cut the felt to fit the board.

Hot glue the felt around the edges.

Let it dry, and done!

Hands-On Learning This Week
Ten years ago, it felt like a trip down memory lane—I was tapping into my past experience with preschoolers and putting it into practice at home. Here’s what we were up to:
- Magnet letters on a cookie sheet – We’ve been working on letter recognition and building words.

Curious George puzzle – A big hit in our house!

Bible memory practice – Found some great resources at the Dollar Store for just $1.

Evan-Moor consonant sounds folder game – A fun way to reinforce phonics.

Candy Land – Because learning colors and counting is more fun with a game!

Music Time!
We’d also been diving into more music. Ny was loving piano practice and was determined to improve. I helped her out until she got through Level 3 in John Thompson’s, and she made great progress. Stay tuned—next time, I’ll share a clip of us singing together!
Until next time, happy homeschooling!
I will be trying this for sure!!! I'm a new follower, LOVE your blog! Morgan from http://www.tottreasuresnorthbay.blogspot.com.
I need a flannel board so thanks. I never find good educational things at the dollar store. Sometimes I feel, overwhelmed in the planning and implementing of our homeschool and I think how in the world did I believe that i could homeschool my boys. It is so demanding and sometimes I don't feel up to the task. Other times I feel capable and blessed for the opportunity. It can be draining hang in there.
